Aren't We ALL A Bit Sexist?

Everyone says stupid shit from time to time, ever since we learned to communicate.

It's a question that should be asked. "Aren't we all a bit sexist? Not everything we say should be taken so seriously. Then again, if people didn't accidentally insult the goth chick/witches, half of the people here reading this blog would still be male, right? Just nod and say, "yes, ma'am!" as I make yet another caption about a guy being changed into a girl!

Today Steve Martin had to take down a tweet in loving memory of Carrie Fisher, who died yesterday (Fuck you again 2016!) His tweet, which he has had to take down, said this, "When I was a young man, Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. She turned out to be witty and bright as well." That was it. He neglected to mention that she was probably coked to the gills at that time since she was dating Belushi (or was it Ackroyd, one of those two) but that is beside the point. I understand that she was a feminist and fought against sexism and all that ... but I don't think that was his intention. I could be wrong but I think he was saying, "Even in Hollywood, she was enchantingly beautiful, but she was also one of the smartest and substantial people I've ever met." I am not sure if that is less than 140 characters but since he was her friend, I'm guessing he's expressed that to her personally and not had her flip out over it.

Carrie Fisher was, I would say, even wittier than her father who was known to be quite the raconteur way before my time. She was a feminist, but also a realist, and she could give just as much as was thrown at her. She took the literal "slave bikini costume" and used it to empower women to choke out their metaphorical Jabbas .. or to paraphrase Steve Martin, their own personal El Guapo. What he said won't hurt her legacy, and hopefully people won't let it ruin his either.

Time to get off my high horse, and I will leave you with these sexist words that I posted to Karensue in regards to this TG caption: "Hope you enjoy this and have a wonderful new year .. cooking for me and some, umm, other tasks for which I require your services!"

We have 2 submissions for the DIY Challenge now. You still have another day or so to get one in if you haven't already done so. Check out the original post HERE for the requirements!

DISCUSSION QUESTION: It's hard to say where to draw the line when it comes to comments made about people, and whether they go too far. My sense is that there is always a line that shouldn't be crossed, and it usually involves intent. What do you think about Steve Martin's comment and the sensitivity that modern society seems to be under lately and how can you tell what IS and what ISN'T objectionable? Is there a litmus test to judge everything or should it be case by case?

  1. Gotta say, I personally think people are way over-reacting to steves post. So he thought carrie was/is hot, whoopty-do. Sometimes men find women attractive, that happens. I`ll admit that I find many women attractive physically, many of us are genetically programmed to be. that dosent mean i dont respect women, . and it certainly dosent mean I support the rape culture thats still lurking around these days. I dont believe that steve does either. his tweet may not have been worded well, but shame on those who shamed him into deleting what was meant as a nice memorial post. please keep in mind, her beauty wasnt the only thing he mentioned.

  2. Now here is a subject that would take more than a few words in a comment box to go into.
Unless you can take time to dot the i s and cross the T s its very easy to get shot down.
Best to remember that there can be two sides to every argument and you may not be right.

  3. Fun cap.

2016 is indeed a year in wich many icons passed away. After Carrie Fisher, today her mother Debbie Reynolds. May the rest in piece, and be remembered for their finest work.

Well, I put my submission in your folder, so there are at least three now.
