The One Hit Wonder

Just made this one and posted it for Nadine in the Haven. Had the picture for awhile, and had an idea in mind, but pretty much forgot all about it until now.

I originally used comic sans but I HATE it and it looked just BAD! Went back to my original font, and just played with the shadings and depth a bit to at least get it focused. I wanted it to remain a black and white caption, holding the source material in such high regard as I do. I honestly think that music video is in the top 2-4 videos of the 1980's, and it is probably my favorite pop song from that decade.

I named it "The One Hit Wonder" because in the US it was their only big hit. They were still pretty big in Europe into the late 90's before they broke up. I guess they still do reunion shows and he can still hit that friggin' high note.

Anyway, here's the video that inspired this caption:

DISCUSSION QUESTION: Any other significant 80's videos that we could possibly mine for TG captions? I would think Thriller by Michael Jackson would be a given. The problem is that there are only so many iconic images from 80's videos. What ones can you think of?

  1. First of all Dee Take on me don't have a direct translation in spanish as "tomame" as the video suggest "giggle" apart from that it's means "llevame contigo" heh, heh, heh.

Gotta love the crumbled traductions people make on lyrics heh, heh, heh its happen all the time.

    Now for the cap...

I think it's a pretty interesting concept you launched in there and also thats quite the drawing you put in there, for me thats pro level "giggle", so as for what you write i assume is your drawing?

If it you have an amazing skill ^-^
    Hugs and Kisses Alectra

P.S: That video is one of my favourite, i think there is also a video in family guy where chris tries to reach a bottle of milk and he get transported into a black and white weird world and the song starts to play "giggle".
And then he comes out and gets prompted with a question by lois:
    Where have you been?
    I dunno... heh, heh, heh

As for videos i assume the Rick roll song got pretty famous on the internet but i wouldn't know how to bring something from that song, and just because i hate it sooooo much "giggle"

  2. Really creative cap! Love the references to Take On Me. Wonderful drawing, too.

  3. Hmm... I think this cap might go well with one of your previous discussions. Does this rely to much on knowledge of the video to be enjoyed. As its one of my favorite videos, its hard for me to say so, but I have to admit I was a little lost in the first half. Only when it got to 'A-ha! and 'Take on Me' did it all really click.

But with all that said and having knowledge of the video, I did think this was a great cap!

Now.. 80s videos that would lend themselves to TG captions...

    Legs by ZZTop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EXXZVdUJ98

Don't Come Around here No more by Tom Petty... but that fits in with the Alice In Wonderland theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0JvF9vpqx8

  4. Wonderful reference to the video, works so well. I don't know about 80s videos (well, actually I do, I've seen so many and really love 80s music) but there is one 90s one which could make a good caption, "A Change Would Do You Good" by Sheryl Crow. It certain sparked an interested in TG for me.

  5. @ Caitlyn

I have definitely thought about Legs by ZZ Top. I used to imagine that the girls in the car were going to give me a makeover like that and then we'd have lots of wild hot lesbian sex!

I think that Petra made a caption based off the Tom Petty video. Someone did at least, because I am pretty sure it was for me!

    @ Terri

I don't think I've seen that video. I don't really remember too much about the 90's. Call it a lifestyle choice or drunken musician days, but that is my fuzziest decade! LOL

I did have wild fantasies about Patsy and Adina of AbFab brainwashing me to be like them though. Oh yeah, Shirley Manson from Garbage inspired some of my dreams as well.

    @ everyone

I was much more into Cyndi Lauper than Madonna, so She Bop and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun would be some fun 80's videos to do up as a tg caption.

  6. Well here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDwLPMOzHLY

Please check it out. Ah yes I've had the brainwashing fantasies before. I used to want to be like one of the girls in my school, taught how to 'stand in' and be like her.

  7. I've put off posting to this because I was determined to pick out a 80's video that would work for a TG cap. I'm an 80's kind of girl, so it should have been easy. But All I could think of, was welcome to my nightmare by Alice cooper, (going to give that one a shot!)which wasn't from the 80's. And Electric Barbarella by Duran Duran. (again, giving that one a shot!)

oh, and I know the tom petty stuff so well, I could probably turn any of his vids into a tg cap.

Good choice on the Duran Duran one .. I think ANY of their videos could work. Just watched the Behind the Music on them as well.

I also remember Steffie making a caption for Karma Chameleon within the last year or so.

I also remember "Shot in the Dark" by Ozzy where the girl attending the concert turned into some evil demoness .. I wanted to be her so much!

  9. @ Dee

Thanks! I agree on any Duran Duran vids being turned into a TG Cap. Electric Barbarella Just seemed like one of the most obvious. And the song's really catchy too with a bit of sex appeal thrown in for good measure, so that helps. Never got to see their behind the music though, bet it was a good one.

Karma Chameleon is soooo easy! lol. I'm surprised you've only seen one of them recently. *giggle*

And I can see why you would want to be her, that looks like it would make a fun TG cap. you know, i remember hearing on pop up video that the girl in "You don't know how it feel's", by tom petty, was actually a cross dresser. I could hardly tell at first!

  10. Well, I've been thinking carefully, and I thought that if they were carefully
adapted, the following songs could fit a TG scene. "Nobody Does It Better" by
Carly Simon, "Ride of the Valkyries" by Richard Wagner, which was used to cracking
success in Apocalypse Now, "Bolero" by Maurice Ravel, the Indiana Jones theme by
John Williams and "I'm A Slave For You" are just crying out to be used.
