Sometimes you can really learn from your elders!
I don't know any hairdressers now, in the past I knew a stripper that also worked at a salon during the day, but I'm wondering how much work they are actually getting, especially the steady weekly customers that used to frequent the beauty parlors like they did back in the day. I can remember my grandmother fretting when she would need to switch an appointment to a different time, as literally every stylist was booked solid .. and the only one with open slots was the "new girl".
I wonder if Barber Shops have become the new "beauty parlors" where guys have appointments the same time each week, to touch up their hair and keep it neat and clean. I would have no idea, as I've been shaving my head for 20 years now. But I would guess it's just one of the many things that have blurred the lines of traditional gender roles as the manner of life evolves from mid 20th century upwards towards where we are now.
What says you, those who lurk in the comment section?!? Do you expect us to have a fashion revolution soon, where vintage clothing comes back again? It's honestly been quite a while since I have seen that happen. Could JNCO jeans make a serious comeback or chunky heels? "Frankie Says Relax" shirts and leg warmers?
I imagine more than a couple of those customers might have grandchildren they would like to fix up... or make over?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I was wondering the same. I posted this and then today I was hanging out with a friend who JUST had her hair done, and was so happy that her usual girl was back doing hair, as she quite back in March, and she was having trouble finding a new girl that fit her standards. This friend of mine is in her 40's now so I guess there is still enough clientele out there!
DeleteI remember going to the beauty parlor with my mom when I was young.
ReplyDeleteI couldn’t stand it and once I was a teenager I wanted no part of it.
I don’t know if retro styles would be a good thing, I think that many people look back with rose colored glasses.
I dug out my high school yearbook and I don’t think anyone would ever want to wear that stuff again.
Although my regular outfit around the house these days is my comfy jeans and old t-shirts just as I wore back then so I don’t know for sure.
But I draw the line at the big hair and giant clunky shoes.
I’m doing a little better and I’m glad to hear that you are too,
Love

So glad you commented, as I had sent an email a month or two ago and hadn't seen anything new from you until about 2 weeks ago with some new posts.
DeleteI guess it depends on the type of retro that people are trying to achieve. I was at a punk rock flea market earlier today and there was so many gothy women there, and some old school punkers too .. and me drooling over the rock-a-betty's as they walked by. Amazing the amount of goth kitchen aprons they had there LOL
I'm sure you look just fine in the comfy jeans and t-shirts. I used to tease my forever person that her clothing style was "lesbian lumberjack" and that was fine with me .. plus, due to my Rocky Horror days, I walked much better in heels than she did!
